When people ask me what my major in college was and I answer "actuarial science", I almost always have to explain, so it is understandable to wonder how one comes across this field.
I'll try to keep the story short since this isn't what my blog is really about!
Basically, I started off my freshman year as a psychology major, pretty set on the idea of getting my PhD. I also took math classes... honestly just because I would miss it if I stopped. Nerd, I know. So by junior year I was a double major, mathematics and psychology, but my mom was starting to get on my back about what I was actually going to do with my life.
I worked in a schizophrenia research lab at school for credits one semester... and although I found it interesting, I knew it was NOT something I wanted to do. I researched other psychology careers and realized most decent paying jobs would require a lot more schooling and A LOT more money. Also, the amount of students majoring in psychology is huge and competing with all those people to do something I don't even love was not very appealing. So, psychology was ruled out.
Now what can I do with a math major? Accounting? My mom is an accountant... but I would have to take all those business classes I have no interest in... What else can I do? ACTUARY. That option popped up everywhere and since I was already a math major, I almost had the requirements completed anyway! So I decided to give it a try. I took a microeconomics class over the summer before my senior year and honestly kicked assssss. I loved it. It was like interesting math with real life purposes! Why hadn't I ever considered economics before?! I was so mad I hadn't discovered it sooner. But this was it! I knew what I wanted to do. I got my school schedule sorted out and my journey began :)
